Extruded Polystyrene Board:

XPS Polystyrene Waterproofing Protection Board

It is a tough, fanfolded, extruded polystyrene (XPS) closed cell foam that provides durable protection for membranes as well as for insulation.

Pactiv Greenguard PB4 features high resistance to moisture absorption and cushioning properties that makes it an excellent choice for use in retaining walls and planters. It is one of the toughest, most economical, and weather resistant layers of protection you can put between the earth and your building's waterproofing membrane.

Basic uses:

Use Pactiv Greenguard PB4 after applying the waterproofing membrane to exterior foundation walls to prevent damage when backfilling.

High compressive strength and impact resistance withstands tough load pressures and backfilling impact.

Superior resistance to moisture absorption and decomposition from long-term exposure to chemicals in the soil.
The extruded polystyrene foam is closed cell and hence has excellent thermal and impact sound insulation for tiled balconies, IRMA roofs and pavers laid directly on the PB4

Advantages:

Reliable protection for waterproofing membranes and no nails required to hold in place. 6.4mm thick fanfolded bundles that quickly unfold to18.6 sqm. Simple installation especially against torch applied membranes on retaining and planter walls as no expensive adhesive or tapes required just spot torch the membrane and press on the PB4. Significant time and labour cost savings and less risk of damage to the waterproofing compared with conventional protection board such as PP (polypropylene) and FC (fibre cement).

Lightweight, easy to transport, handle, trim, cut to size and apply. The high impact polystyrene covers makes adhesion 100% effective and long lasting. Obviates the need for expensive drainage cell which can only be secured properly with nails.

GreenGuard PB4 Waterproofing Protection Board should be used after applying the waterproofing membrane to exterior foundation walls to prevent damage when backfilling. GreenGuard PB4 Waterproofing Protection Board has a high compressive strength and impact resistance to withstand the toughest load pressures and backfilling impact. GreenGuard PB4 Waterproofing Protection Board is available as a 6.4mm x 1.219m x 15.24m (1/4" thick, 4' x 50') fanfolded product. GreenGuard PB4 Waterproofing Protection Board is lightweight, easy to transport, and easy to install. Since it is Extruded Polystyrene, PB4 Waterproofing Protection Board's dense closed-cell construction provides superior resistance to moisture absorption and decomposition from long-term exposure to chemicals in the soil.

The tacky surface of the partially cured liquid membrane, or a brief torching of the surface of Wrimco sheet SBS membrane, or any polystyrene-compatible adhesive will hold GreenGuard PB4 in place during back-filling operations.  A Stanley knife is all that is needed to cut and fit GreenGuard PB4 on the job.  The packs can even be cut with a power saw so no special tools are required.  The PB4 Insulation Board R-Value of 0.3 metric units makes it an excellent thermal insulator. The fact that PB4 Insulation Board does not absorb moisture means that the R-Value is retained over time and remains dimensionally stable so can be tiled or concreted over.

All waterproofing protection boards have one thing in common - they need to provide reliable protection for waterproofing membranes.  Without a protection board, materials used to waterproof perimeter concrete or masonry walls can be easily damaged during backfill operations. Fibre cement protection boards are heavy, hard to handle, expensive or time-consuming to apply, while extruded polypropylene packaging sheet needs nails to secure in place. In response to this, Pactiv Building Products USA developed GreenGuard PB4, which is a lightweight, tough, fanfolded, extruded polystyrene protection board, to satisfy the demand for a protection board that is put in place quickly and provides durable protection for the membrane.

Excellent protection for waterproofing membranes:

Once you have applied the waterproofing membrane to exterior foundation walls, protect it from damage during back-filling with Greenguard PB4 protection board.

Because Pactiv Greenguard PB4 is made of extruded poly-styrene (XPS), it has a dense, closed cell construction that resists both moisture absorption and decomposition from long-term exposure to chemicals in the soil and acts as an expansion joint to reduce stressing from clay soils.

Extraordinary durability - Greenguard PB4 features tough plastic capsheets that resist puncturing, plus high compressive strength and impact resistance to withstand even the toughest load pressures.

Energy efficiency - Greenguard PB4 provides long-lasting thermal performance in all below-grade conditions as well as for tiled balconies, IRMA roofs and pavers laid directly on the PB4.

Impact sound insulation - Greenguard PB4 meets the requirements and has the added benefit of acting as a "thermal break" and thermal insulator. PB4 breaks the sound barrier.pdf

Simple installation - Greenguard PB4 comes in lightweight, fanfolded bundles that are easy to transport and install. Just measure off and cut with a panel saw and you have 15.3 linear metres in less than a minute.

Compliance:

PB4 waterproofing protection board complies with all relevant building codes including impact sound insulation for tiled balconies over habitable rooms; also pavers laid directly on the PB4.

Storage and handling:

When stored outdoors, all material should be protected from exposure to direct sunlight using an opaque, light-coloured tarp or otherwise covered, a ll assemblies should be evaluated for effectiveness and location of vapour retarders to avoid condensation and subsequent damage to structures.

Warnings and hazards:

Foam insulation will ignite if exposed to fire of sufficient heat and intensity. protect foam insulation from exposure to open flame or other ignition sources during shipping, storage, and installation. before using the products, always refer to MSDS for important warnings and safety information. use only in areas with adequate ventilation. avoid breathing vapours. keep away from heat and flame. avoid contact with eyes and skin. in the event of skin contact, remove immediately and wash with warm, soapy water. wear suitable eye protection. always wash hands before eating.
