Sikaflex Construction AP Polyurethane Joint Sealants :

Sikaflex Construction (AP) 1-part polyurethane sealant for building joints


Product Description:


Sikaflex Construction (AP) is a one part, moisture curing, elastic joint sealant based on polyurethane. It is suitable for indoor and outdoor applications.




Sikaflex Construction (AP) is used as a general purpose sealant for sealing joints in building construction such as movement and construction/isolation joints around windows and doors, facades, claddings etc. in concrete, brick, wood, metal and PVC sections and structures etc.

System Information Application Details


Consumption / Joint Design


The joint width must be designed to suit the movement capability of the sealant. In general the joint width must be > 10 mm and < 35 mm.  A width to depth ratio of 2:1 must be  maintained. All joints must be properly designed and dimensioned by the specifier and the main contractor in accordance with the relevant standards, because changes are not usually feasible after construction. The basis for calculation of the necessary joint width are the technical values of the joint sealant and the adjacent building materials, plus the exposure of the building, its method of construction and its dimensions.

Backing: Depending on application closed cell, polyethylene foam backing rods or open cell foam backing rod must be used.


Substrate Quality:


Clean and dry, homogeneous, free from oils and grease, dust and loose or friable particles. Cement laitance must be removed.


Substrate Preparation:


Clean, sound, dry and free of oil, grease and surface contaminants such as form release agents, curing membranes and hydrophobic water repellents. Any loose particles or laitance should be removed with a rotary mechanical wire brush followed by blowing out with oil free compressed air. Use Sika cementitious or epoxy mortars for making good spalled or damaged joints.

Application Instructions

Application Method: Sikaflex Construction (AP) is supplied ready to use.




After suitable joint and substrate preparation, insert Backing Rod to required depth and apply primer if necessary. Insert sausage into sealant gun and firmly extrude Sikaflex Construction (AP) into joint making sure that it is full contact with the side of the joint. Fill the joint, avoiding air entrapment. Sikaflex Construction (AP) must be tooled firmly against joint sides to ensure good adhesion.

Masking tape must be used where sharp exact joint lines or exceptionally neat lines are required. Remove the tape whilst the sealant is still soft. Sleek joint with smoothing liquid for a perfect sealant surface.


Cleaning of Tools:


Clean all tools and application equipment with Sika Remover-208 /  Sika TopClean-T immediately after  use. Hardened / cured material can only be mechanically removed. 


Notes on Application / Limitations:


Elastic sealants may not be over painted with rigid or less flexible coatings. Compatibility testing of proposed coatings must be undertaken to ensure suitability. If there is no history of a particular coating/paint being applied over cured Sikaflex- Construction (AP) for a period of six months or more an overpaintability test should be made to determine:


1. That the paint dries properly within the expected time frame.

2. That if the paint film dries satisfactorily it is not subsequently softened and/or stained where it comes into contact with the Sikaflex-Construction when exposed to the heat of the sun.

3. That the adhesion of the paint/coating is satisfactory to the Sikaflex-Construction.


Colour deviations may occur due to exposure to chemicals, high temperatures, UV- radiation. However a change in colour will not adversely influence the technical performance or the durability of the product.

Do not use Sikaflex Construction (AP) as a glass sealer, on bituminous substrates, natural rubber, EPDM rubber or on building materials which might bleed oils, plasticizers or solvents which could attack the sealant.


Sikaflex-Construction should be used with care resealing joints that were previously filled with silicone sealant. Consult our Technical Department.

Do not use Sikaflex Construction (AP) to seal swimming pools.


Not suitable for joints with water pressure or permanent water immersion.


Only use in well ventilated areas. The freshly applied sealant has a smell similar to 'Amaretto' until it has fully cured (benzaldehyde).


Do not mix with or expose uncured Sikaflex Construction (AP) to substances that may react with isocyanates, especially alcohols which are often components within e.g. thinners, solvents, cleaning agents and formwork releasing compounds. Such contact could interfere or prevent the cross linking curing reaction of the material.


Epoxy resin coatings should be fully cured prior to the application of the adhesive / sealant as the uncured amine component could inhibit the cure of polyurethane adhesives / sealants.


Handling Precautions:


Sika sealants are generally harmless provided that certain precautions normally taken when handling chemicals are observed. The uncured materials must not, for instance, be allowed to come into contact with foodstuffs or food utensils, and measures should also be taken to prevent the uncured materials from coming into contact with the skin, since people with particularly sensitive skin may be affected. The use of protecting clothing, goggles, barrier creams and rubber gloves is recommended. The skin should be thoroughly cleansed at the end of each working period either by washing with soap and warm water or by using a resin removing cream - the use of powerful solvents is to be avoided. Disposable paper towels, not cloth towels should be used to dry the skin. Adequate ventilation of the working area is recommended. In case of accidental eye or mouth contact, flush with water. Consult a doctor immediately.
