How to waterproof a Shower :

Remove tiles and restore surfaces to their original condition. Ensure surfaces are sound, dry and free of dirt, dust and contaminants.

Apply a coat of water base Primer to all surfaces at the rate of 4m2 per litre. Allow to dry.

Apply the Flexible Mastic to all floor/ wall corners and all corners of the hob using the wooden or other spatula, to form a thick 45 degree fillet. Ensure all gaps are properly filled.
Fill joints with Flexible Mastic

Fill gaps around waste outlet with Flexible Mastic.

Allow Flexible Mastic to dry.

Install Leak Seal Tape to all 3 way corners as follows.

Cut a strip approx. 300mm. In the middle make a half way cut.

Fold to make a boot. Peel away bottom section of the release paper, place        firmly in to the corner and press firmly on to floor.

Then peel away top section of release paper and press firmly on to the walls.

Install Leak Seal Tape to all wall / floor corners.
Install Leak Seal Tape to floor joints

When overlapping Leak Seal Tape and Polyester fabric ensure overlaps are at least 80mms.
If you wish to create a hobless look to your shower a 40mm by 40mm aluminum angle, cut to size to fit wall to wall, must be installed across the face of shower recess on to the floor as follows.

Start by marking the desired position of the aluminum angle.

Apply one or two 20mm thick beads of a flexible, construction grade polyurethane sealant along entire width (wall to wall).

Use a spatula to flatten the sealant. Embed the angle firmly in to the wet sealant.
Ensure there is sufficient sealant so that there are no gaps under the angle or at the wall junction.
Add additional sealant to corners and leading edge of the angle. Using a spatula or finger smooth out the sealant ensuring all gaps are properly filled. Allow to dry.
For conventional hobs, follow instructions regarding wall / floor and wall / walll corners.
Cut lengths of Polyester reinforcing fabric. To all wall / floor and wall / wall corners apply a coat of Durabit EF about 1mm thick extending 100mm each way from the corner.
Embed the Polyester fabric in to the wet coat. Hint. Place Polyester fabric gently over the Durabit EF coat and with your finger, working from the centre outwards push the matting in to the coating.

Apply a saturating coat of Durabit EF over the Polyester fabric, working the membrane well into the matting. Ensure the fabric is entirely saturated with a minimum 0.5mm thickness of the membrane. Allow to dry.

Using the same method as described in Step 6, apply the Durabit EF membrane and Polyester fabric over all floor joints.

The aluminum angle (or conventional hob) must be fully reinforced and saturated with a minimum 0.5mm thickness of the membrane.
Allow to dry.
Cut 2 x 300mm lengths Polyester fabric. Lay over the waste outlet and mark outline on the waste outlet.
Fold lengthwise in half and make several cuts from the centre edge to the outline as shown.
Apply the Durabit EF to the area around the waste outlet and coat the inside of the waste outlet.

Embed the first length of prepared Polyester fabric in to the wet membrane, positioning it correctly over the waste outlet.

Fold the tongues of cut Durascrim in to the waste outlet.

Apply a saturating coat  Durabit EF .
By brush or roller apply 1 good coat to the walls and 2 good coats of Durabit EF to the floor and corners.
Ensure minimum dry membrane thicknesses are: Floors & Corners: 1.2mm Walls: 0.5mm
Allow membrane to fully cure before tiling. Use a tile adhesive to suit the type of substrate. Durabit EF is compatible with most quality tile adhesive.

These instructions give you an easy to follow, step by step, pictorial guide to waterproofing your shower recess like a professional in accordance with AS3740. Although comprehensive, this Shower Recess Waterproofing Kit is designed for a standard, basic shower recess of approximately 0.9m x 0.9m base and 2.5 m2 of wall area. It may not constitute a full specification for applications beyond this.

Application Techniques

Although similar to the application of paint, the application of a waterproofing membrane requires that the coating be applied approximately 10 times the thickness of paint per coat and that the entire surface be meticulously and uniformly covered leaving no gaps or holes. It is important that all steps are carried out.

DO's and Don'ts

Do read these instructions fully before starting. You may require additional items.

Do prepare and clean the surfaces well.

Do take your time.

Do allow each coat to dry before applying the next. Some steps can be done concurrently.

Do take care not to spill product on to surfaces not intended for coating, particularly carpets and porous surfaces. Spills will be almost impossible to remove.

Don't cut corners. Follow every step.

Do ensure that you apply the product at the correct thicknesses, a minimum of 1.2mm for floor and corners, and 0.5mm for walls.

Do allow the membrane to fully dry for a few days before tiling.
