Fire Proof Joint Sealant:

Fire rated, one-component, acrylic joint sealant for low movement interior applications

Description

 

Flamex One is a fire rated, non-slump, waterborne, acrylic joint sealant which dries quickly forming a flexible seal having good adhesion to most common building materials. It has very good application and finishing characteristics and forms a smooth skin quickly. Flamex One is flexible and will accommodate up to +/- 10% of structural movement between building components such as precast and insitu walls and ceilings, window and door frames as well as pipe penetrations. Flamex One is intended for use in relatively low movement interior joints, and is not suitable for use in water ponded or submerged applications.

 

Design criteria

 

Flamex One is suitable for use in low movement interior joints in compartment walls, corridors, basements and around building components such as fire door frames, where a fire rating of up to 4 hours is required.

 

Fire test results

 

Extensive fire testing has been carried out on Flamex One in accordance with Australian Standard AS 1530 - Part 4, as confirmation of its suitability for construction applications.

Note: The above test results were achieved through the application of Flamex One to only one side of the joint. Results apply to "fire exposed" side of construction joints between concrete wall panels 120 mm thick.

 

Joint design

 

Flamex One can be used in joints from 6 mm up to 30 mm wide. The depth of the sealant should be half the width with a minimum depth of 12 mm. The width of the joint must be designed so that the sealant's maximum movement accommodation of +/-10% is not exceeded. Where fire risk is present on both sides of a panel, it is best to apply Flamex One to both sides of the panel.

Application instructions

 

Joint Backing

 

In deep joints in walls and non-trafficked horizontal surfaces, Expandafoam must be used as backing material in order to achieve the correct joint configuration. In formed joints, a polyethylene bond breaker tape must be used to ensure the Flamex One does not bond to the back face of the joint.

 

Joint preparation

 

The joint faces must be dry, clean and frost free. Remove all dust, laitance, form release agents and curing compounds by vigorous wire brushing, grinding or grit blasting. Remove all rust, scale and protective lacquers from metal surfaces. Remove any oil or grease with Solvent.

 

Priming

 

The use of primers is generally not required on correctly prepared surfaces. On excessively porous surfaces adhesion can be improved by diluting a small quantity of Flamex One, 1:3 with water and brushing this into the joint sides.

 

Tooling

 

Immediately after gunning Flamex One into the joints, the sealant must be well tooled using a smooth tool with preferably a slightly convex edge. A little water may be used to assist tooling.

 

Tooling forces the sealant to make good contact with joint faces and so ensures the good surface wetting essential for optimum adhesion.

 

Clean up

 

Equipment should be cleaned immediately after use. Water may be used for uncured Flamex One while soaking in water combined with scrubbing will be required to remove cured sealant.

 

Estimating Packaging

 

Flamex One: 600 ml sausage

 

Coverage

 

Each 600 ml sausage will seal approximately 2 metres of a 25 mm x 12 mm joint.

 

Storage

 

Twelve months in original containers stored in cool, dry conditions i.e. not exceeding 25 C. Storage above this temperature may reduce storage life.
