Duromastic Duropond

is a liquid membrane product based on a unique double crosslinked copolymer system. The product is waterbased yet offers strong water resistance. The cured membrane has exceptional flex and elasticity for good crack-bridging properties while at the same time maintaining good tensile film strength. Duropond has excellent re-sistance to UV, colour fade and chalking. DUROPOND is easily maintained, recoated and re-paired .The water content is low which enables fast drying, and thick films to be built up quickly. The product is supplied as a thixotropic liquid, which is easily applied to both vertical and horizontal surfaces. It complies fully with the test requirements of AS:4858-2004 "Wet Area Membranes" and passes at Class III, the highest level in the Australian standard. Duropond is applied as part of a system with primer Duromix Hibuild WBE.

Within ponds and tanks under construction, the air and surfaces tend to be colder and more damp than sur-rounds. This and the fact that the air is not moving much will slow drying and curing, especially in cooler or wetter months. It is essential to allow time for the primer and Duropond to dry thoroughly between coats. In winter & autumn, application in the warmest part of the day is recommended. Drying can be ac-celerated by fans or heaters. Do not apply Hibuild WBE primer or Duropond below 10oC ambient . Do not apply Duropond above 30oC. Do not apply during wet weather conditions, or if rain is likely.

Good surface preparation is essential for optimum performance. Ensure water features, ponds and tanks are structurally sound and free of cracks. In below grade locations with a high water table, it is recom-mended to waterproof the positive (earth) side of any blockwork construction) with Duroproof PU Black or Duro Mastic BLW. This will reduce seepage of water and salts to the inside surface where the primer will later be applied. Blockwork construction must be prepared so that the cavities are completely filled, all mortar joints are filled and flush and the surface is as smooth as possible, i.e. free of sharp edges, pits, gaps, grit and mortar resi-dues. Preferred is 20mm to 30mm of sand and cement render over the blockwork. Remove all dust , loose particles, contaminants and curing compounds. If necessary water-blast unsound or powdery concrete sur-faces. Concrete must have a minimum strength of 20MPa and be cured a minimum of 28 days. It is best if the surfaces are dry as possible before priming. Slight dampness may be tolerated initially, provided the primer can thoroughly dry after application. Before applying Hibuild WBE primer and Duropond, any problems from rising damp, continual wetness or hydrostatic pressure must be remedied.

Prime the interior with 2 coats of Duromix Hibuild WBE as detailed in the product's technical data sheet. It is essential that the application of the primer is carried out correctly. For blockwork or porous surfaces dilute the mixed Hibuild WBE with water up to 10% and 'work' the product into the surface so that all pores and pinholes are filled and sealed. Apply a further one to two undiluted coats until no pin-holes are visible and an even solid coat is formed. Allow the final coat of primer to dry thoroughly, i.e. at least 24 hours in summer and up to 72 hours in cool to cold conditions. Next, apply Durotech Fast Cure PU Sealant at all horizontal and vertical junctions such as floor to wall, and wall to wall. Apply a neat smooth fillet about 12mm by 12mm. Remove all sealant residues and overhangs. The sealant can be coated after a good skin has formed (approx. 1 hour).

Ensure that the primer is thoroughly dry and cured. Apply Duropond by brush or roller in at least two or more coats to achieve a total minimum dry film thickness of 1.2 mm. Do not apply in one thick coat. In cold conditions it it may be best top apply as 3 thin coats or accelerate drying by fans or heaters. Allow to dry as long as possible between coats, then check for pinholes and thin areas, and recoat if necessary. If the membrane becomes dirty or damaged between coats, clean with water and recoat. Spills and tools should be cleaned with water before Duropond has dried.

Coating maintenance is based on regular inspection and then timely repair of any damage and deterioration by thorough cleaning using a little sugar soap and water, followed by thorough rinsing. When dry, apply Duropond.

Precautions in Use

The product is considered safe if used correctly as intended and proper industrial hygiene and practices are used. Always observe safety precautions.

Priming and Preparation

Good preparation is essential. Surfaces must be sound, stable, dry, clean and free of loose, flaking, friable material, dust and substances that may diminish adhesion. Surfaces should be dry, sound, stable, free of gaps, dirt, dust, algae, fungus and other contaminants.

When constructing water retaining structures, 2 ply plastic sheeting should be laid on the ground prior to the laying of the concrete slab. If the structure is below ground the plastic sheeting should be turned up between the walls and the ground. This prevents rising damp and allows the structure to properly dry, which is essential. The structure should be solid, stable, gap free and ideally have coved corners.

These must be filled, sealed and waterproofed with a suitably flexible, polyurethane joint sealant finishing flush with the surface. The joints must not move beyond the capability of the membrane. Apply a suitably flexible, polyurethane joint sealant to all right angled corners and tool off to form a thick fillet. If walls are constructed of brick or block work the fillet should extend and cover the first rung of mortar. Allow to cure.

Prime all surfaces with Primeseal MC applied at 3 to 4 sq.m. per litre per coat. Excessively porous or friable surface should receive at least two priming coats. Timber surfaces must be primed with at least 2 coats of Primeseal MC applied at 3 to 4 sq.m. per litre per coat.

Primeseal MC may be applied to slightly damp surfaces but the surface must become dry in order for the products to dry. Damp surfaces will increase the drying time and although possible it is not recommended.
When in doubt apply a second coat of Primeseal MC as this will enhance the waterproof quality of the system.
Allow primers to fully dry before applying Fish Pond Sealer.

Stir well. Apply by brush or roller in coats of about 500 microns to 750 microns (0.5 to 0.75mm thick).
Apply a minimum of two coats of Fish Pond Sealer. Perform correctly the dry film thickness of the membrane must be at least 1.2 mm. Each coat must be fully cured before applying the next.

Apply about a 750 micron thick and 200m wide coat of Fish Pond Sealer and embed Polyester reinforcing fabric in to the wet coat. Apply a similar saturating coat over the fabric , working the wet coat well in to the fabric ensuring that it is entirely saturated, covered and free of wrinkles and bubbles. Allow to dry. Apply one or two further coats so that a thick dry film of membrane covers the fabric. Each coat must be fully cured before applying the next. Allow the system to fully cure before filling with water. Prematurely filling can cause bubbling, blistering or re-emulsification of the membrane. The membrane will not be waterproof until it has fully cured.

Before filling with fish or plants, hose down the surface, flush the water, re-fill and treat or age the water as required.

The stated average coverage rate may vary depending upon type, condition, porosity, texture of the surface and application technique.

Unreinforced: Minimum 1.5 litres per sq.m., i.e 0.75 litres per sq.m. per coat. A 15 litre pail will cover about 10 sq.m. with 2 coats being applied.
Reinforced: Minimum: 2.0 litres per sq.m.

Fish Pond Sealer is available in Midnight blue and Black (two most popular colours). Special colours are available upon request but minimum quantities will apply).
Available in 4 and 15 litres pails.

Drying and Curing

Drying and curing of the product is affected by type, dryness and porosity of the surface, temperature, humidity, ventilation, climate conditions and application technique. Therefore drying and curing can only be given as a guide. It is a fast drying water based product.

Expected curing at 25oC at 50% RH:
Touch dry 4 hours per coat
Set 12 hours
Full cure 48 to 168 hours (4 to 7 days).
Protect from rain and inclement weather until fully cured. If product is damaged by rain prior to curing, drain water, remove uncured or damaged coating, allow to dry, clean (see preparation), ideally re-prime then re-coat as described in application.
Cold, damp and high humid conditions will prolong curing.

Store in a cool, dry area. Product is not flammable. Do not allow to freeze.
Shelf life is 6 to 12 months.

Clean Up

Wet spills can be cleaned with water, but spills should be avoided as they are difficult to remove from porous surfaces.

Tiling, Topping or Top Coating

Usually not tiled or topped but Fish Pond Sealer is compatible with most tile adhesives and 3:1 sand:cement beds. Ideally the beds should be sealed/waterproofed to prevent the bed absorbing and holding water.

Selection of the tile adhesive should be compatible with the flexibility of the substrate and suitable for immersion in water. Two pack adhesive systems are preferred. Tiling must be done in accordance with AS3958.1-1991 and adequate expansions joints installed.

Safety & Precautions

Fish Pond Sealer is user friendly and safe to use if used correctly as intended. Nevertheless, protect eyes and skin and observe the safety precautions on the can and data sheet. The use of splash goggles and rubber gloves is recommended.

We recommend that the coated surfaces be thoroughly flushed with clean water and drained. Ensure water is suitably aged and treated before introducing fish or plants.

Tensile Bond: 2N/mm after 14 days

Application temperature range: 10 to 35oC

Moisture Vapour Transmission: 0.26 g/sq.m./24 hours.
